Skirts Are Peaking—7 Trends Set to Take Over This Fall

Fall wardrobing is usually synonymous with denim, but this season, there's a rivalry brewing because the fall skirt trends on deck are so good you just might find yourself overlooking your jeans to test-drive one of them. For the past several seasons, designers have been putting skirts into full focus, anchoring their collections around a few key skirt styles. This includes Tory Burch's gauzy sheer styles, Miu Miu's pleated schoolgirl-esque skirts, and the voluminous A-line silhouettes at Prada. For fall, designers are only doubling down on their fascination with these outfit-making skirts, and there are so many fresh styles on deck for the season ahead.

Yep, skirts are looking cooler than ever this season, and I'm about to prove it to you. I've done a ton of trend research and pulled out seven fall skirt trends that will define the season ahead. From the pretty sheer styles that make a chic impact to the denim skirts everyone will be skipping blue jeans for, behold the coolest skirts of fall 2023. Mark my words: Fall 2023 is the season of the skirt.

On its fall runway, Prada sent out a number of midi skirts with a very 1950s-inspired A-line silhouette. The voluminous shapes are a dramatic departure from the streamlined column skirts and micro minis that have largely defined skirt trends until now, but these retro midis feel undeniably fresh. Fashion people are already mimicking the runway by styling the skirts with simple knits and polished kitten heels.

Okay, it wouldn't be a fall report without a hint of denim, and I'm pleased to report that denim maxi skirts are here to stay for the rest of the year (and likely beyond). This season, there's a focus on low-rise skirts and Y2K-inspired denim tints.

Launchmetrics Spotlight/Tory Burch

When The New York Times reported that Who What Wear editors "audibly gasped" at this Tory Burch collection, they weren't wrong. Our entire editorial team is in the throes of an obsession with the brand's S/S 23 runway, specifically the gauzy sheer skirts that the designer offered up. Whether your layer a long sheer skirt over a solid-colored miniskirt or embrace a full see-through moment, these Tory Burch looks should serve as your main point of inspiration.

Pleated miniskirts may have had their moment in the sun, but the preppy style is officially giving way to a longer version that feels just as academic and easier to wear. Yep, pleated midi skirts are set to be a major trend for fall and winter, and they look especially good with knee-high boots and classic loafers.

Flowy white skirts were everywhere I looked this summer, but as we move closer to fall, they show no signs of slowing down. Instead of putting the boho styles away, fashion people are simply finding new ways of wearing them to maximize their shelf lives in cooler weather.

Miniskirts are hardly new, but they're still very much around in simple, tailored versions. Think of these menswear minis like the skirt version of your favorite trousers. The most 2023 way to wear them is with flat shoes like loafers, ballet flats, and sneakers.

I still can't see a drapey hemline without thinking of the early 2000s. The fashion crowd has been reintroducing us to asymmetric silhouettes in fresh ways that feel very 2023.
