From Mikey Mouse to Dolly Parton, the 5 Things You Need to Know From Gucci

We've said it before and we'll say it again: It's Alessandro Michele's world, and we're all just living in it. The Gucci designer has conveyed a cunning ability to share the most impactful fashion trends of the moment, making this show one to study carefully. To present the S/S 19 collection, the fashion house relocated its runway show to Paris where it was held at the historical Théâtre Le Palace.

Gucci might have been in Paris, but the show had an ostensibly American mindset. It would be hard to ignore the collection’s references to iconic figures of American culture, from the Mickey Mouse handbags to the garments featuring Dolly Parton's face on them. The motif was conveyed in more nuanced ways as well, via oversize plaid shirts, denim cutoff vests, and big cowboy hats.

As always with Gucci, there's a lot to unpack, but simply keep reading to see the top five moments you need to know about from the show and then watch the full runway video below.

The cowboy trend is here to stay.

Appearing atop the heads of both women and menswear models, large white cowboy hats were the designer's undeniable nod to the current western trend.

Calling all Disney fans.

Gucci's love of symbols and iconography was fully present in this collection, which featured recognizable Mickey Mouse heads that are surprisingly fully functional handbags.

An ode to Dolly Parton.

The hats may have been implicitly inspired by the singer-songwriter Janis Joplin, but the screen-printed sweatshirts (like the below) and denim vests explicitly honored country music performer Dolly Parton.

One word: extra.

It wouldn't be a Gucci show if there weren't over-the-top extra-ness embedded in every little detail. For spring, loads of jewel-toned sequins, fringe, and feathers are all in order.

The accessories were... dreamlike

You could say that the accessories were something out of a dream, like this crystal-encrusted headpiece. You could also say that they were manifested because of a dream state, with blackout eye masks and all.
