Well, this was inevitable. The next big It sneakers, that is. The immense popularity of Adidas Samba sneakers has undoubtedly paved the way for another pair of retro soccer-style sneakers, and these are from a veteran brand that's experienced a resurgence as of late: Asics. But first, a little bit of history.
Japanese sports brand Onitsuka Tiger was founded long ago in 1949 and merged with ASICS in 1977. The sneaker style that it's most known for is the Mexico 66, which was released in 1966, two years before the Olympic Games in Mexico City. The sneakers, which retail for around $100 (just like Sambas), used to be readily available on sites like Shopbop, but now, good luck finding them in your size… TikTok mentions of Onitsuka Tiger seemingly increase by the second. The yellow-and-black pair, in particular, has become especially hard to get your hands on.
So why am I telling you this now? As you may have guessed, Kaia Gerber just wore the shoes, further solidifying them as the next It sneakers. She styled the hard-to-find yellow pair just like a chic Parisian would: with an oversize trench coat and black trousers. Of course, I immediately went down an Onitsuka Tiger rabbit hole, and you get to benefit from the fruits of my labor. Scroll to see how Gerber and other fashion people are styling them and shop all of the (mostly) in-stock pairs I could find.
