The Luxurious Coat Trend That Will Define 2024

We may only be a few days into the new year, but we're already speculating what will come to define the coming months. Call it editor's intuition or pure delusion, but our bingo cards are being assembled with the brands we think will burgeon into the next big thing and the celebrities that we're guessing will have a glow-up this awards season. Of course, we know that even the most intuitive person can't fully predict what trends will win out as they often behave in a manner akin to dice on a roll—constantly changing fortunes with a flick of the wrist. Nevertheless, we're willing to take a chance on placing our faith in certain premonitions. 

One of trends we're placing big bets on? Satin coats. Hear us out: This outerwear style will surely become one of the biggest trends of the year. Our rationale isn't just based on guesswork but on the deep research we've done digging through recent runway collections. It's something that we're certain will not only be worn for the rest of winter, but well into the spring, and even fall. Not convinced? We should start our argument by stating that satin coats have been around for a long time. Although not as seemingly a massive outerwear trend at the time, we did see satin coats surface on the runways earlier last year. One might recall when models donned pastel satin coats that were as slick as ice in 16Arlington's S/S 23 show. Or perhaps how, in Givenchy's F/W 23 show, double-breasted coats were reworked and fashioned from high-shine (but dark) satin textiles. While each collection was stunning, no doubt, their subsequent impacts on the cultural fabric were not something that registered at first—at least, until the release of S/S 24 collections.

One could argue that these two collections set the blueprint for what was to come, as across spring shows, we saw every type of satin outerwear imaginable: trench coats, posh puffers, oversized blazers, and so on. Although each collection's approach was, arguably, different, the throughline was that satin was the fabric of choice in making those more "simple" silhouettes shine again. It's a trend that feels indicative of the larger influence that the "quiet luxury" movement had on shifting our collective relationship with clothing. With so much of the focus on items that lend themselves to being a part of a capsule wardrobe, there has been a vacuum for pieces that could find that fine balance between appealing to minimalists and maximalists—satin coats manage to fill that space.

In an effort to prove that point, we've taken the liberty of rounding up looks from the runway and real life that display the versatility of satin coats. Plus, we've shopped out the best satin jackets from high-street and affordable fashion brands for good measure. If these looks don't convince you that satin coats will be the defining outerwear trend of 2024, nothing will.

Style Notes: In Givenchy's S/S 24 show, the embrace of satin was used to add further visual intrigue. It wasn't just that the textiles came in vibrant hues but that they were styled with sheer slip skirts, knits, and sheer stockings.

Style Notes: We saw Tory Burch give the Peter Pan coat a twist through the usage of a silver shiny satin material.

Style Notes: We've also seen the fashion crowd gravitate towards this outerwear trend, choosing to pair it with other statement items like snakeskin boots.

Style Notes: Altuzarra's S/S 24 featured numerous drool-worthy satin items, including a saffron red coat.

Style Notes: With Khaite's S/S 24 collection, we saw satin coats reach new levels of cool, thanks to the adaptation of a boxier silhouette with prominent shoulder pads.

Style Notes: Even our editorial staff (myself included) have taken to wearing satin coats. They're the perfect way to add a bit of unexpected texture to all your late-winter ensembles.

Style Notes: There's no better way to display sharp tailoring than with a sleek satin material—or at least that's what the minds behind Sportmax's S/S 24 collection believed. We saw sharp suiting separates come in sleek satin fabrications.

Style Notes: Even coats you wouldn't expect to come in satin did this season—like the parkas from Carven S/S 24 collection.

Style Notes: Far more wearable than one would guess, satin coats pair well with even the most "basic" items like a tank top, pencil skirt, and mules.

Style Notes: Although you can wear this outerwear trend with everyday staples, we did see numerous designers lean into the formality of the textile. For example, in Chloé's S/S 24 collection, a black satin blazer was styled with matching trousers and sandals for a look that felt a bit more "buttoned up" overall.

Style Notes: In addition to the more tailored versions of this coat trend, we saw more duster-inspired silhouttes emerge on the runway. Most notably in a white duster styled over a matching satin bralette and trousers at Bevza.

Style Notes: We also saw the satin coat trend take center stage in Sandy Liang's S/S 24 collection. The look might not have made its debut  on the ballet stage, but this coat danced the fine line perfectly between being timeless and trendy.

Style Notes: When in doubt, you can make even the simplest suiting separates feel more special by swapping them for ones made from satin. Case in point? The outfit above in which a pleated skirt and matching blazer feels perfect for a special night out thanks to their shiny satin finishes.

Style Notes: The chicest example of this trend was found in Carolina Herrera's S/S 24 collection, which featured a floor-length camel satin trench coat styled as a dress. The look served as a reminder that the key to looking luxurious isn't necessarily about being covered in head-to-toe labels but instead making outerwear the focal point. You don't need too much to look great this coming year… besides a satin coat.
